Recipes for disaster - Trailer
Concerned about the world's addiction to oil, and its disastrous environmental consequences for the planet, the filmmaker convinces his family to live "oil-free" for one year.
Mr Coal Ad
Coal executives will say anything to make people believe that coal is safe. Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign has won victories to retire 106 of the nation's over 500 aging coal-fired power plants, and is working to replace those plants with clean energy like wind and solar power.
Sierra Club partnered with 2011 Small Agency of the Year Mekanism Inc to spread the word about the dangerous and deadly effects of coal through this online videos series featuring 1980's TV footage.

GDP vs HPI (Production vs Happiness)
Our Global economy is based on infinite growth,,, which sounds fantastic until you contemplate the finite planet in which we live...
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been the measuring stick for governments to determine their success and growth was meant to free the world from poverty and raise the living standard...
Production of stuff,,, more & more disposable stuff... We work more, to earn more,,, to buy more stuff..! More work equals more stress equals monetary compensation / gain to buy more stuff, most of which we dispose of anyway...
Quantity vs Quality... Have we forgotten what actually makes us happy..?
Statistician Nic Marks asks why we measure a nation's success by its productivity -
- instead of by the happiness and well-being of its people. He introduces the Happy Planet Index, which tracks national well-being against resource use (because a happy life doesn't have to cost the earth). Which countries rank highest in the HPI? You might be surprised.
Nic Marks gathers evidence about what makes us happy, and uses it to promote policy that puts the well-being of people and the planet first. He's the founder of the Centre for Well-Being at the UK think tank New Economics Foundation (NEF).
1. Connect - social interaction
2. Be Active - get outside
3. Take Notice - awareness
4. Keep learning - curiosity
5. Give - generosity

Ocean Acidification...
Learn more about Ocean Acidification: The Other CO2 Problem
To learn more about the science behind the film, see a list of citations.
ACID TEST, a film produced by NRDC, was made to raise awareness about the largely unknown problem of ocean acidification, which poses a fundamental challenge to life in the seas and the health of the entire planet. Like global warming, ocean acidification stems from the increase of carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere since the start of the Industrial Revolution.
Leading scientific experts on the problem, many of whom appear in the film and the outtakes below, believe that it's possible to cut back on global warming pollution, improve the overall health and durability of our oceans, and prevent serious harm to our world, but only if action is taken quickly and decisively.
The film originally aired on Discovery Planet Green. An Entertainment Industry Foundation grant provided the core funding for this film. Cinematographers Howard and Michele Hall and Nel Boshoff provided footage, and many other people assisted greatly in the making of ACID TEST. To learn more about the movie and who was responsible for it (and get an idea of what it was like to work with narrator Sigourney Weaver), read co-director Daniel Hinerfeld's blog.

Two Faced climate policy...
Two faced kitten born in Australia... |
It's ironic that Australia is moving toward a 'cap' on carbon emissions because while we've got this paper target for a five per cent reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2020 we've also got the foot on the accelerator and running in overdrive expanding the coal and gas mining at an unprecedented rate.
Australia is on target to increase CO2 emissions originating from our shores by over 400 per cent. It's a simple trick of accounting: claim a five per cent reduction by ignoring our fossil fuels that are burnt off shore.
This approach of saying one thing while doing another isn't new to politics, but normally doesn't keep currency with the population for so long. Trumpeting supposed carbon action while quadrupling our carbon emissions is a complete farce and has been going on for half a decade.
Amongst a population of 20 million, Australia has a very high level of climate denialism when compared to the political will and actions of 300 million people in Europe.
The difference is that we currently have a "national imperative" to issue as many coal and gas extraction licenses as possible before the world wakes up and will not buy our dirty energy.

Surfing World Champions say no to oil, yes to sanctuaries
Joining together before the Margaret River Pro 2012 got underway, eight of Australia’s surfing champions - including two-time World Champion Tom Carroll and local legend Dave MacAulay – called on Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke to refuse oil drilling leases on the Margaret River coast and protect the iconic region in marine sanctuaries.
Photo at Surfers Point, Margaret River (from left to right):
Tom Carroll – two-times World Champion and three times pipe master
Tom Whitaker – Margaret River Pro winner 2008

Paul Paterson – Big Wave Champion
Dave MacAulay – Former World number 3 and WA legend
Jake Paterson – Pipeline Master, Former World number 5
Kieran Perrow – Pipeline Master and current World number 13
Dino Adrian – Pipeline Master
The surfing champions consider Margaret River to be a global icon for surfing and are alarmed at how vulnerable the coast is to the threat of oil drilling and spills after the Government 2 years ago declared a new oil lease just 80 kilometres from Margaret River.
Tony Burke has the opportunity in a few months to eliminate this oil lease if he declares a marine sanctuary over the lease as part of the South West network of marine parks.
“Overseas, I’ve had globs of oil stuck on my feet making things pretty awful. To come back home here and know that you are always on beautiful waves in a pristine environment is pretty special. It's hard to believe oil drilling is even being contemplated.” Dave MacAulay said.
Events like the Margaret River Pro, which is a magnet for tourism and a boost for the local economy, would be at risk if an oil spill happened.
Modeling using CSIRO developed software has shown an oil spill in the Margaret River Oil lease could see oil on beaches from Perth to Margaret River.
“The Federal Government has so far failed to act on ongoing community outrage about the proposal for oil drilling off Margaret River.” Tim Nicol from the Conservation Council of WA said.
The Margaret River Pro, formerly the Margaret River Masters, attracts up to 200 of the worlds best surfers and is considered one of the world’s most prestigious international tournaments. It is part of the Association of Surfing Professionals world tour.

Who is Joseph Kony..!
Who Is Joseph Kony? from INVISIBLE CHILDREN on Vimeo.
Find out at KONY2012.com
WHO IS JOSEPH KONY?
JOSEPH KONY IS THE WORLD’S WORST WAR CRIMINAL. IN 1987 HE TOOK OVER LEADERSHIP OF AN EXISTING REBEL GROUP AND RENAMED IT THE LORD’S RESISTANCE ARMY (LRA).
THE LRA HAS EARNED A REPUTATION FOR ITS CRUEL AND BRUTAL TACTICS. WHEN JOSEPH KONY FOUND HIMSELF RUNNING OUT OF FIGHTERS, HE STARTED ABDUCTING CHILDREN TO BE SOLDIERS IN HIS ARMY OR “WIVES” FOR HIS OFFICERS. THE LRA IS ENCOURAGED TO RAPE, MUTILATE, AND KILL CIVILIANS–OFTEN WITH BLUNT WEAPONS.
THE LRA IS NO LONGER ACTIVE IN NORTHERN UGANDA (WHERE IT ORIGINATED) BUT IT CONTINUES ITS CAMPAIGN OF VIOLENCE IN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC, AND SOUTH SUDAN. IN ITS 26-YEAR HISTORY, THE LRA HAS ABDUCTED MORE THAN 30,000 CHILDREN AND DISPLACED AT LEAST 2.1 MILLION PEOPLE.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF KONY 2012?
INVISIBLE CHILDREN HAS BEEN WORKING FOR 9 YEARS TO END AFRICA’S LONGEST-RUNNING ARMED CONFLICT. U.S. MILITARY ADVISERS ARE CURRENTLY DEPLOYED IN CENTRAL AFRICA ON A “TIME-LIMITED” MISSION TO STOP KONY AND DISARM THE LRA. IF KONY ISN’T CAPTURED THIS YEAR, THE WINDOW WILL BE GONE.
WE ARE TAKING ACTION TO ENSURE THESE TWO THINGS:
1) THAT JOSEPH KONY IS KNOWN AS THE WORLD’S WORST WAR CRIMINAL.
2) THAT THE U.S. MILITARY ADVISERS SUPPORT THE UGANDAN ARMY UNTIL KONY HAS BEEN CAPTURED AND THE LRA HAS BEEN COMPLETELY DISARMED. THEY NEED TO FOLLOW THROUGH ALL THE WAY AND FINISH WHAT THEY HAVE STARTED.
WHY ARE WE MAKING JOSEPH KONY "FAMOUS"?
INVISIBLE CHILDREN’S KONY 2012 CAMPAIGN AIMS TO MAKE JOSEPH KONY FAMOUS, NOT TO CELEBRATE HIM, BUT TO RAISE SUPPORT FOR HIS ARREST AND SET A PRECEDENT FOR INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE. IN THIS CASE, NOTORIETY TRANSLATES TO PUBLIC SUPPORT. IF PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THE CRIMES THAT KONY HAS BEEN COMMITTING FOR 26 YEARS, THEY WILL UNITE TO STOP HIM.
SECONDLY, WE WANT KONY TO BE FAMOUS SO THAT WHEN HE IS STOPPED, HE WILL BE A VISIBLE, CONCRETE EXAMPLE OF INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE. THEN OTHER WAR CRIMINALS WILL KNOW THAT THEIR MASS ATROCITIES WILL NOT GO UNNOTICED OR UNPUNISHED.

Taj Burrow "Kleans" up at QUIKY PRO 2012...
In a super close final that has boiled some Brazilian blood, Taj Burrow took out the 1st www.aspworldtour.com event for 2012.
Burrow defeated dangerous South American Adriano De Souza (BRA), 25, in a Final that came down to the wire. De Souza caught a wave in the dying minutes and launched into a massive air-reverse, requiring a 7.87 out of a possible 10 to take the lead. The judges deliberated until after the siren sounded and when it was announced that De Souza came a mere 0.27 short, Burrow was chaired up the beach and declared the 2012 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast champion.
De Souza finished runner-up at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast for the second time, after coming 2nd to Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, in 2009. De Souza was easily one of the event's top performers this season with gouging turns and inverted aerials taking him to a podium finish.
Burrow used a heat-high wave score of 9.43 to win with a total of 15.86 to de Souza's 15.60 much to the delight of a raucous capacity Snapper Rocks crowd who adopted the West Australian as one of their own.
Burrow assumes the No.1 ranking as the World Tour heads to Bells Beach from April 3-14, while de Souza on No.2 is well placed to improve on last year's finish of fifth on the world rankings.
Snapper Rocks has proved a happy hunting ground for Burrow, who has appeared in the past three finals, winning in 2010 and finishing second to Kelly Slater (USA) last year.
Burrow said victory was sweet after last year's loss to Kelly Slater.
Earlier in the semi-finals, Burrow defeated South African Jordy Smith 15.56 to 14.20 while de Souza defeated crowd favourite Josh Kerr (AUS) 14.16 to 13.57 in the dying seconds.
Burrow was forced to work hard for the spoils with a tough road to the final including defeating opponents such as Dane Reynolds (USA), Julian Wilson (Aus), Adrian Buchan (Aus) and Smith.

Unconventional Wisdom - Yvon Chouinard with Surfer Mag...
You can’t be a happy person without using your body. That’s the reason you feel so good after surfing, even if you’ve had a shitty day.
I started surfing at 16. I made my own board out of balsa. Eventually I traded the board for a Model A Ford engine. I drove that Model A all over the place—Canada, Wyoming. It was a fair trade.
There were so few surfers. I’d drive from the Valley down to Malibu, and guys coming back from Malibu would give you the thumbs up or down. Now they give you the finger.
The surfing itself hasn’t changed at all. There’s still a wave and a board and a wetsuit. But the equipment has gotten a lot better. I used to surf Ventura overhead in February with no wetsuit, no leash, and when somebody lost their board, you’d have to follow him in and make sure he made it.
Personally, I try to lead a simple life. I don’t walk around with my hat on backward looking like a surfer. My Patagonia clothing, some of it is 20 years old. Just because I have a clothing company doesn’t mean I have closets and closets of brand new clothes.
Sure, it’s a consumer society, but you don’t have to be part of it. I hardly ever spend any money. Consumerism is just people trying to make themselves happy by consuming. And that’s wrong. Doesn’t work.
The secret to happiness is to be working at your passion. If you want to be miserable, lead a desperate life like everybody else where they drag their asses to work everyday because they hate their job.
My wife and I give 50 percent of our salaries away to charity. I don’t need the money. I don’t hang out with other businessmen. I’m a surfer for God’s sake. The only reason I hang on to this company is that I’m totally pessimistic about the fate of the planet. I feel like I couldn’t sleep at night unless I felt like I was part of the solution.
What’s wrong with just accepting the fact that there’s a beginning and an end to everything? I’m perfectly comfortable that I’m going to die.
I just live right now. You ask me about the past, you ask me about the future, the only way to be happy is to be living right now.
Everybody I know who’s studying the fate of the world is totally pessimistic. There’s no reason to be optimistic. We’re not going to get a handle on global warming, we’re way too late for that. It’s just a matter of knowing that you’re doing what you can, and so be it.
It’s not too late to start. I give talks to young people, and I can just see what’s going on in their heads. They’re thinking, “Oh yeah, when I get rich, I’m going to give a bunch of money away.” But it’s all relative. Ten dollars given away now is worth more than a hundred given away ten years from now. So you don’t have to be rich to be a philanthropist, or to do good.
I’m going to be in that seventh level of hell for using so much jet fuel. I don’t have the strength of character to say, okay, I’m going to quit traveling.
The whole history of America is you despoil your area and then you move west, right? Once you hit the bridge, you become multi-national and screw up the rest of the world. We’ve got to go back to absolute local living. You protect what you love, and how can you love something when you’re just looking for new loves all the time?
