The Responsible Company... Patagonia Books

Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia & 1% For The Planet, & Vincent Stanley co-editor of its Footprint Chronicles & VP Global Marketing deliver a LiveStream from Yale about their recent book about Corporate Responsibility...

Here are the powerful oening Paragraphs --

We are still in the earliest stages of learning how what we do for a living both threatens nature and fails to meet our deepest human needs. The impoverishment of our world and the devaluing of the priceless undermine our physical and economic well-being.

Yet the depth and breadth of technological innovation of the past few decades shows that we have not lost our most useful gifts: humans are ingenious, adaptive, clever. We also have moral capacity, compassion for life, and an appetite for justice. We now need to more fully engage these gifts to make economic life more socially just and environmentally responsible, and less destructive to nature and the commons that sustain us.

Watch the event on LivestreamBuy The Responsible Company

“We’ve come to the heart of our book, which is to lay out the elements of business responsibility, as we see them, to five key stakeholders: owners, workers, customers, communities, and nature. For each element we will provide a related checklist of things companies can do to become more socially and environmentally responsible while strengthening their business health.” Download The Responsible Company checklist

B CORP goes Global...

The B Corporation Movement Goes Global at CGI 2012
B Lab Commits to Certifying 100 B Corps Internationally and Announces Partnership with Sistema B in South America
September 25, 2012: New York, NY
Today, on the main stage at the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting, B Lab announced its commitment to certify 100 B Corporations outside the U.S. in 2013, responding to demand from entrepreneurs around the world to join the B Corp movement.
“Impact requires scale and global reach; by extending the B Corp movement into emerging markets in South America, India, Asia, and Africa, the B Corp movement will have dramatic impact on the development of more inclusive and sustainable economies,” said Andrew Kassoy, B Lab Co-founder.
As part of the launch, B Lab formally announced their first international partnership, working with Sistema B to build the B Corp movement in South America. Together they will build a founding class of 100 South American B Corps by the end of 2013. B Lab also commits to expand the community to other regions of the world, with the goal of having B Corps in 20 countries on six continents, and of reaching a total of 750 Certified B Corps globally.
“Quarterly shareholder value should not be the only benchmark by which we judge corporations. It’s worth investing in something with a slightly longer time horizon,” said President Clinton at Resource 2012 at Oxford University.
Certified B Corporations are a new type of corporation which uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. To grow outside the US, B Lab will establish partnerships with organizations that have regional presence and expertise and leverage financial and technical support provided by the Inter American Development Bank, the Rockefeller Foundation, Halloran Philanthropies, Prudential Foundation, Linklaters, the Ford Foundation, the Avina Foundation, InnovaChile CORFO and Deloitte LLP.
______________
B Lab: is a nonprofit organization dedicated to using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. B Lab drives systemic change through three interrelated initiatives: 1) building a community of Certified B Corporations to make it easier for all of us to tell the difference between “good companies” and just good marketing; 2) accelerating the growth of the impact investing asset class through use of B Lab’s GIIRS impact rating system by institutional investors; and 3) passing benefit corporation legislation in all fifty states. For more information, see www.bcorporation.net
Sistema B: is a global platform that promotes and facilitates the scaling of businesses that redefine success in business and in our societies by using the power of the market to solve social and environmental problems. It aspires to achieve this by building a strong regional community of B Corporations, enabling a dynamic support ecosystem and promoting the necessary public policies and instruments. Sistema B is currently inspiring and connecting this new generation of entrepreneurs in Argentina, Chile and Colombia and aspires to formally launch in Brazil in early 2013. For more information, see www.sistemab.org.
About the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI): Established in 2005 by President Bill Clinton, the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) convenes global leaders to create and implement innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. CGI Annual Meetings have brought together more than 150 heads of state, 20 Nobel Prize laureates, and hundreds of leading CEOs, heads of foundations and NGOs, major philanthropists, and members of the media. To date CGI members have made more than 2,100 commitments, which are already improving the lives of nearly 400 million people in more than 180 countries. When fully funded and implemented, these commitments will be valued at $69.2 billion. CGI’s Annual Meeting is held each September in New York City. CGI also convenes CGI America, a meeting focused on collaborative solutions to economic recovery in the United States, and CGI University (CGI U), which brings together undergraduate and graduate students to address pressing challenges in their community or around the world. Crazy Ass Grasshopper...

On Friday, September 21, 2012 SpaceX's Grasshopper vertical takeoff and landing test vehicle (VTVL) took its first test flight hop from the company's rocket testing facility in McGregor, Texas. The short hop of approximately 6 feet is the first major milestone for Grasshopper, and a critical step toward a reusable first stage for SpaceX's proven Falcon 9 rocket. As seen in the video, Grasshopper consists of a Falcon 9 first stage, a Merlin-1D engine, four steel landing legs, and a steel support structure. SpaceX is working to develop vehicles that are fully and rapidly reusable, a key element to radically reducing cost and increasing the efficiency of spaceflight. Testing of Grasshopper continues, with the next big milestone -- a hover at roughly 100 feet -- expected in the next several months.

Clouds Above - Official Trailer

Filmed & edited by Angus Stone "I was living with a family in the hills in the South of India and I brought my camera along and I filmed my stay. The one thing I spent most energy on was sitting by the hornets nest for hours with my camera just waiting for them to hatch. When I think back I was very much coming to life again through my journey to india just as the hornet was seeing the world for the first time in this clip for clouds above."

V.Co-Logical

As part of a New Future program, our V.Co-Logical Series represents Volcom's environmentally conscious movement towards sustainability and 1% of every dollar customers spend in this category goes to select environmental protection organizations by way of 1% For The Planet. Fall 12 premium quality Volcom Brand Jeans with environmentally conscious V.Co-Logical efforts--
1. Renewed Selvage Denim (100% USA Made): The existing Cone Selvedge denim used to produce these jeans was made in the USA at the White Oak factory in North Carolina. By renewing old premium / limited denim in a way that is giving new value to an existing product, this program helps us lower our environmental impact. In addition these jeans have been cut and sewn in the USA, making them 100% USA made.
2. Water Saving & Chemical Free Denim: Our most environmentally conscious denim to date. The wash used to create these save an estimated 17 gallons of water per jean, resulting in a 94% decrease in the amount of water used compare to conventional methods. Furthermore, by using ozone bleaching and laser finishing, when compared to more conventional methods, a 100% reduction of chemicals used in the wash of these jeans make them easier on the environment and on the people finishing them.
3. Organic Cotton Denim: These jeans contain 100% organic cotton. Organic cotton is grown without toxic chemicals and utilizes biological pest control methods, relying on natural fertilizers to dramatically reduce the crop's environmental impact.
