Humpbacks love pecks paste...
A woman floating on a surfboard near Santa Cruz, California almost ended up as pecks paste for a humpback whale over the weekend.
Barb Roettger had her camera rolling as two hefty whales popped out of the calm waters not far from the unsuspecting surfer and a pair of kayakers.
A pod of humpback whales has been hanging out off the Santa Cruz coast, noshing on anchovies that flock to the area to feed on plankton. The woman found herself in the middle of a feeding frenzy called lunge feeding, which occurs when whales herd anchovies and shoot straight up out of the water with their mouth wide open to catch the fish.

The Story of Broke 2011 - We're not broke..!
Psst,,, pass it on...
http://storyofbroke.org — The Story of Broke
The United States isn't broke; we're the richest country on the planet and a country in which the richest among us are doing exceptionally well. But the truth is, our economy is broken, producing more pollution, greenhouse gasses and garbage than any other country. In these and so many other ways, it just isn't working. But rather than invest in something better, we continue to keep this 'dinosaur economy' on life support with hundreds of billions of dollars of our tax money. The Story of Broke calls for a shift in government spending toward investments in clean, green solutions—renewable energy, safer chemicals and materials, zero waste and more—that can deliver jobs AND a healthier environment. It's time to rebuild the American Dream; but this time, let's build it better.

Did You Know..?
Did You Know? - Music Industry Remix (15 Million hits on youtube...)
A while back Scott McLeod, Jeff Brenman (who did the Slideshare version) and Karl Fisch received an email from someone at Sony BMG Music Entertainment asking us if they could remix the various versions of Did You Know? for a meeting they had coming up. We said sure and they came up with this and gave us permission to link to it.Here's the written description:
The following adaptation of the original "Shift Happens" presentation was created by Sony BMG Music Entertainment. The video, presented by Richard Sanders, President of Sony BMG International, was shown on 4 May 2008 to 150 of the company's top executives gathered in Rome for Sony BMG’s annual Global Management Meeting. As part of Sony BMG’s mission to improve the music experience for consumers living in "exponential times", the video illustrates the demand for change. No words of wisdom here, I just thought some of you might find it interesting.
Update: That link no longer works, but you can find it on YouTube, or download a high quality version (mp4, 41.9 MB). As with all remixes of Did You Know?/Shift Happens, it's Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share-Alike licensed, so you're welcome to use it under that license.

1% For The Planet Ambassador - Steve Jones
Steve Jones is the Co-founder of http://www.tetongravity.com/
Teton Gravity Research (TGR) began in 1995 and was founded by 4 friends who were passionate about the mountains and ocean. The vision was to put out products that came from the athletes' perspective, and that were more representative of the youth and progressions that were taking place in action sports. The company was founded by Steve Jones, Todd Jones, Corey Gavitt, and Dirk Collins with money they had earned from commercial fishing in Alaska.
TGR is one of the fastest growing brands in the action sports industry. Founded in 1996, TGR has produced 28 award winning feature length films, numerous television series for Showtime, NBC, Fox Sports, and Fuel TV, and is known for its cutting edge media and lifestyles clothing line. People refer to our products as a source for the latest progressions and innovation.
TGR is a lifestyle. We live and think outside. The stoke that we embrace is based around natural elements. It comes from pushing ourselves to the edge of what is possible. Today many of our natural playgrounds are being threatened by things like climate change, pollution, and development. Although we are far from perfect, TGR continues to take steps towards preserving these playgrounds and the bigger world around us. The new line is made from environmentally minded materials. It is inspired from the people, places, and lifestyle we embrace.

One Straw Revolution - Zen Farming...
I had the pleasure of reading Masanobu Fukuoka's inspirational book "One Straw Revolution", more info at http://www.onestrawrevolution.net/index.htm, whilst siting on an idyllic porch over looking a majestic "Do Nothing" style "No Dig" Garden, cover to cover, whilst a photo shoot was taking place for a local food book. Not only is it the easiest read in history and I think that's because he's not trying to prove anything, merely align, so its one of the most fascinating and comforting reads I've ever experienced also... Its seems that life is so simple when you stop trying to control it...
Fukuoka and his subsequent movement is the inspiration to many modern movements (like permaculture, biodiversity, sustainability & holistic management, etc...) all turning back to nature... For nature is perfect and we are stuffing it up!
Who & when...? Us & Now...!
Enjoy..!
"The One Straw Revolution" narrated by the book's editor Larry Korn. In 1973, he was under the tutelage of his Sensei (teacher), Masanobu Fukuoka, who lived in Shikoku Island, Japan. Korn received a hands-on education in the art of non-cultivation and do-nothing, natural farming. Translated in many languages, Masanobu Fukuoka wrote "The One Straw Revolution," (New York Book Reviews), a classic memoir and guide. You'll learn about his philosophy and the Four Principles of Natural Farming: no cultivation; no chemical fertilizer or prepare compost; no weeding by tillage and herbicides; and no dependence on chemicals. Even though his methods require less labor, it can result in higher yields for your farm or garden. To learn more, visit www.onestrawrevolution.net.
*Produced and edited by Joy and Daniel Davis of Beyond 50 Productions.
**Narration and photos provided by Larry Korn, editor and translator of "The One Straw Revolution" (www.onestrawrevolution.net).

Still... Surfing... by Nathan Oldfield
Stillbirth & Surfing from Nathan Oldfield on Vimeo.
WOW..!
Mark Twain said that there aren’t enough words in all the languages in the world to express the sorrow of losing a child. This is a short film I produced while grieving for my daughter, Willow, who was stillborn.
This short actually forms the centrepiece of a feature length surf film I made, called Seaworthy. Since the film’s release, I have received many heartfelt words of sympathy & encouragement. There have been scores of letters & emails from surfers from all over the world that have been sensitive & authentic & moving. I have been especially touched by the messages from those who have travelled their own grief journeys. I am awed & humbled that my work somehow resonated with others’ broken hearts.
A common theme echoed among the beautiful feedback I’ve received is that the story deserves a wider audience. Surf films, by definition, appeal to only a limited demographic, & the kind of surf films I make are left-of-centre even within surfing circles. So I decided to post this online, in the hope that it may reach a few others, especially those who may be living with loss & longing.
All of us experience & express grief in varied ways, which is a good thing since we’re all different. Because I’m a surfer, this is how I gave expression to my experience of bereavement.
Thanks for taking the time to watch.
6 on the Street - Shaolin Afronauts

The mysterious afro-soul of The Shaolin Afronauts first echoed across the dance floors of Australia in late early 2008. Heavily inspired by the sounds of 1970's West Africa, Ethiopia and the pioneering avant-garde jazz artists of the same period the Shaolin Afronauts draw on the this highly innovative and sometimes volatile era in music, using it as inspiration to create music with the same fire and intensity. Their spirited performances have fast gained a reputation as some of the most exciting live shows around.
Originally conceived as a side project for members of The Transatlantics the Afronauts have quickly grown into one of the most exciting bands in the country, captivating listeners with their fully instrumental original Afrobeat sound. The key to the Shaolin Afronauts unique sound is the line-up, which comprises of a three-piece horn section, 5-piece rhythm section and three percussionists.
The Afronauts have recently signed to UK based label Freestyle records and with their debut album due to be released internationally on CD and LP in February 2011 you can expect to see and hear a lot more of this band in clubs across the world.
Check them out as the play WOMADelaide 2011!

Natural Gas....
Maybe not as "natural" as the name suggests...
Gasland is a must see for everyone, it makes you think about the quality of the water you drink...
And raises many questions...
- Are they FRACING near you?
- Do they need all the deadly chemicals or does it just make it cheaper / easier to extract?
- What's the cost to the environment and future generations?
- Who really pays while these companies profit?
