This is something that is very close to every surfers heart. The oceans around Australia are currently being looked at for levels of protection. At the moment the Australian Government are looking at an area from South Australia to SW Western Australia. Which is 1,000,000 kilometres squared in area. The big problem here is that the percentage that will become protected is very, very small.
The oceans around this area have the most diverse marine life in the world, bigger than the great barrier reef in Queensland, Australia, bigger than anywhere else in the world. SW Australia is the last frontier, the most isolated habitat in the world, but its the richest as far as natural resources are concerned. In other words, there's to much money to be made outa extracting gas and minerals from the ocean to ignore it.
