Hawaii

My first time ever on the Island was when i was 15, and that was 14 years ago. I surfed the biggest waves of my life and experienced moments that i will remember for a long time. Seeing the power of the ocean at certain breaks was one thing, but what stood out the most was the feeling of fear as i paddled out towards the horizon each time i saw a set. Then overcoming the fear by trying to hold your ground and be in position to actually catch one. After that the fear would dissolve into more of an addiction to catch another one, and another one. Hanging out with Kohl Christensen recently for a week in Hawaii brought back some of these feelings, mostly fear:) No huge goals or outcomes expected other than to catch some solid waves and test a few boards. It was one of the best spur of the moment trips ive ever done. That feeling of dropping into a decent size wave or getting held under for a while really slows you down mentally. I remember Kohl mentioning that the cool thing for him about surfing huge waves is that it's the place where he thinks of nothing at all except for whats going on in that particular moment. I know that for the 3 hours i was out in the lineup at Jaws with him, i didn't think of much else except, where's the next set, and where do i have to be to not get it on the head! This one was close.. thats us in the middle :)

Digital Detox

Bottoming Out on Digital Media? Try a Digital Detox

Yes, it has come to this: “Digital Detoxes”–offline stays for those of us bottoming out on information overload. While we’ve looked at tools for combating the attention span crisis in the past, for many of us, the temptation to go online makes these tools insufficient for quelling information overload.
It seems evident that the pervasiveness of online use is reaching a saturation point.
  • A 2009 study found the average American spends 13 hours/week on the internet, not including email; 14% exceed 24 hours/week. Numbers that are surely getting bigger.
  • A Google study found that 72 percent of those surveyed use their smartphones while consuming other media and that 1/3 are on their smartphones while watching TV.
In one way shape or form, most of us are looking at glowing boxes for a good portion of our waking hours, including our vacations.
Young Island at St Vincent’s
A tour company called Black Tomato offers a nine day digital detox in the remote Caribbean islands of St Vincent’s and the Grenadines for $3800 (includes airfare from London and accommodations). The company strips you of your devices and offers a life coach to help you with the detoxification process.
Less remote, less financially taxing, is The Digital Detox, which offers personal and corporate retreats in Ukiah, California. For $450-950 for three, all-inclusive nights, guests surrender all of their devices, including watches. Days are spent hanging out at the hot springs, eating vegetarian cuisine and doing yoga. Instead of chronically their trip on their phones, are encouraged to journal.

In an interview with Buzzfeed, The Digital Detox founder Levi Felix ”When people go on vacation and have the intention of unplugging, studies show that they spend 30% of the time working or on some kind of tech anyways” He even said that “people find themselves going on a camping trip, grabbing their phone and going on old emails,” even when there’s zero cell coverage.
In other words, it’s not enough to go off-grid. Many of us need our devices pried from out hands to get completely offline.
What do you think? Does being online represent freedom or repression? Is being online all the time–even on vacation–necessarily a bad thing?

Blue Fin Tuna

Known to some as the Tiger of the Sea, the bluefin tuna can swim at speeds of up to 60 mph and grow to 1500 lbs and 15 feet long! However, their popularity as sushi and sashimi, and the fact that they're slow to grow and reproduce has caused them to be severely overfished. Some species are even listed as Endangered. Seafood guides recommend avoiding ordering bluefin to allow the species to recover (http://www.montereybayaquarium.org//cr/SeafoodWatch/web/sfw_factsheet.aspx?fi...).

Bluefin meat also carries a health warning due to high concentrations of mercury and PCBs. Bluefin can be identified under several other names including hon maguro, kuro maguro, toro, or horse mackerel. GO Fish! Know Your Seafood - Visit http://oneworldoneocean.com/gofish to learn more.

Happy 143 Ghandi..!

On what would have been Gandhi's 143rd birthday here are five inspirational quotes from the Mahatma ( skipping over the ones most people probably already know, like being the change you want to see...) for the green movement.
  1. "There is more to life than increasing its speed."
  2. "First they ignore you; then they laugh at you; then they fight you; then you win."
  3. "The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problems."
  4. "Interdependence is and ought to be as much the ideal of man as self-sufficiency. Man is a social being."
  5. "When I admire the wonders of the sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator."

Big Easy Express - Official Trailer

Big Easy Express Official Trailer from S2BN Films on Vimeo.

Directed by Emmett Malloy 3 bands, 6 cities, 1 train, and thousands of miles of track…BIG EASY EXPRESS captures an incredible musical journey. Harkening back to the days of jubilant railroad revivals, of steam and steel, three bands set out in April 2011 to tour America by vintage train. L.A.’s Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Nashville boys Old Crow Medicine Show, and Londoners Mumford & Sons climbed aboard amid the massive rail yards of Oakland and set out for New Orleans on a “tour of dreams.” Stopping along the way to play sold-out shows in spots as diverse as San Pedro, California, and Marfa, Texas, BIG EASY EXPRESS documents the bands’ vibrant railway adventures; the high canyons, joyous crowds, blasted skies, late-night laughter, endless music…and a train that was bound for glory.

Klean Kanteen Receives Esteemed B Corp Certification

Klean Kanteen, an industry leader at providing sustainable solutions to single-use plastic, recently completed requirements including an in-depth assessment process to become a certified Benefit Corporation. Certified B Corporations are progressive businesses focused on, above all else, solving social and environmental problems. The comprehensive assessment through B Lab, a nonprofit organization that certifies B Corps, vets all aspects of company structure from human resources and codes of conduct for the supply chain, to sustainability efforts. Klean Kanteen's mission lives true in the definition of a B Corp and the company is proud to be part of this growing and cutting-edge movement.

"Everything from our global production process and our fair labor and environmental standards, to our company structure and shared individual responsibility both inside and outside of the office is grounded in the same fundamental values from which B Corp was conceptualized", says Danielle Cresswell, Director of Sustainability at Klean Kanteen.

Klean Kanteen products are not just a feel good choice, they are progressive, functional designs that perform a task much better than the paper, plastic and aluminum options. Not all alternatives to single use products are created equal— it is paramount to the Klean Kanteen mission to offer only Responsible Solutions that are designed with health, safety and sustainability front of mind.

"Working to earn a spot within the emergent B Corp community is not simply a badge of honor for our company," stated Scott McGuire, Director of Sales and Marketing, "but the assessment process became a systematic way for us to enhance our already established processes and procedures while also setting a foundational structure for intentional growth in the future."

As an industry leader, it is Klean Kanteen's hope that stricter standards on corporate transparency as well as the growing demand for safe, healthy alternatives to plastic will help drive the industry forward. Growing consumer awareness for the hazards of everyday toxins will lead to the identification of greener chemistry and a broader range of safe, sustainable alternatives for all single-use products.

Great Barrier Reef - Catastrophe

Australian Institute of Marine Science senior scientist Hugh Sweatman says the reef's health has decreased dramatically.
Australian Institute of Marine Science senior scientist Hugh Sweatman says the reef's health has decreased dramatically.
Half the Great Barrier Reef's coral has disappeared in the past 27 years and less than a quarter could be left within a decade unless action is taken, a landmark study has found.

A long-term investigation of the reef by scientists at Townsville's Australian Institute of Marine Science found coral had been wiped out by intense tropical cyclones, a native species of starfish and coral bleaching.

Researchers warned that while the World Heritage listed reef was a dynamic system — with coral cover rising and falling over time — if the mass die-off continued less than 25 per cent would exist in 2022.

"The big concern going forward is that if nothing else changes than within 20 years the reef could be in a perilous state," said institute senior scientist Peter Doherty .

At 214 reef sites surveyed, the coral cover halved from 28 to 13.8 per cent between 1985 and 2012.

Two-thirds of the loss occurred since 1998. Only three of the 214 reef sites exhibited no impact.
