Rachel Beckwith's smile...

In this clip, a young girl's selfless birthday wish has raised over $1M in donations to bring fresh water to developing nations in Africa. 'Today' correspondent Lee Cowan chronicles the birthday wish that spawned a charity movement. "Everyone who knew her said it was Rachel Beckwith's smile that was unforgettable. And yet for those she never met, it was her heart that mattered most," Cowan reports as a photo of Rachel dissolves into footage of the villagers her wish has helped.

"On her 9th birthday, instead of presents she wanted donations. She raised $220. She vowed to do it again next year on her 10th birthday," Cowan explains. Tragically, Rachel died in a massive pileup on I-90 before her 10th birthday. Her family continued her Charity Water drive as a memorial. "Her story spread and soon Rachel's tally grew... Her total is now over a million, enough to help more than 50,000 people," Cowan says.
